I think first-year students must live together with students in 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th grade for a couple of reasons.

First, they will be more able to adjust to the new environment.

For example, since older students have more knowledge and experience, freshman can get a beneficial information based on their own experiene. In fact, many freshmans are suffered from the environmental changes soon after getting into universities, thus the advise from them are instructive to reduce the stress level.

 In addition, it's much easier to build their networking broadly.

For instance, upper-class students already have peers so if a freshman get along with them, it facilitates expanding their friendship quickly. Moreover, by interacting with diverse individuals, stundents would be able to select the optimal choice because most of them don't have sufficient information about clubs, circles, internships, or any organizations.
